August Birthstone: Peridot FAQs
What does the August birthstone peridot represent?
Peridot is traditionally linked to light, renewal, and prosperity. Its bright green tone represents the "tears of Pele" in some cultures, symbolizing a fresh start and emotional healing. As an August birthstone gift, it is often chosen to bring the wearer peaceful energy and clarity of mind.
For more on its fascinating origins, see our August Birthstone: Peridot Guide.
Is your peridot natural or lab-created?
We use only genuine, earth-mined peridot in our jewelry. While the market occasionally features glass imitations or color-treated stimulants, we prioritize authentic peridots that exhibit the stone’s naturally vibrant, lime-green character. Each gem is selected for its clarity and distinct light-refracting properties, ensuring you receive a high-quality, real gemstone that captures the true essence of the August birthstone.
Why is peridot called the "Evening Emerald"?
Peridot earned this nickname because it is highly double-refractive. This means it glows exceptionally bright under artificial light and doesn't darken at night, maintaining its vibrant lime-green color even in dim settings—a rare optical feature that makes peridot rings and pendants stand out in any lighting.
Can I wear my peridot necklace every day?
Yes, but with mindful care. Peridot ranks 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it durable for daily wear in earrings and necklaces. For peridot rings, we recommend protective settings (like bezels) to prevent scratches. To maintain its natural brilliance, avoid harsh chemicals and extreme temperature changes.
How can I tell if my peridot is high quality and real?
Authentic peridot possesses unique mineral signatures that distinguish it from glass imitations. To identify a genuine peridot, professional gemologists look for its signature "double refraction"—a subtle doubling of the back facet edges when viewed through the stone. Under magnification, natural peridot often reveals tiny, disk-like fractures known as "lily pad" inclusions, sometimes accompanied by minute dark mineral points (chromite). Unlike glass fakes, which often appear too "clean," contain rounded air bubbles, or feel suspiciously lightweight, a real peridot has a distinct olive-green warmth, a reassuring heft, and a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, marking it as a true treasure of the earth.
