925 Sterling Silver: Short-Term Oxidation & Surface Wear Clarification

Sterling silver is a genuine precious metal valued for its brightness and refined finish.

All of our silver pieces are crafted in authentic 925 sterling silver, highly polished, and finished with rhodium plating to enhance brilliance and provide additional resistance to oxidation.

Recently, we have received inquiries regarding visible discoloration or noticeable surface wear appearing within one week or within the first month of wear.

We would like to clarify this specifically.

Visible oxidation or plating wear within a short period of time does not indicate that the piece is defective, improperly manufactured, or made from inferior materials. It reflects the natural chemical and physical behavior of sterling silver and surface plating.

Why Changes Can Occur Within Weeks

Silver is chemically reactive.

It interacts continuously with:

  • Airborne sulfur compounds

  • Humidity

  • Perspiration

  • Chloride ions

  • Skincare and cosmetic residues

Under certain conditions — particularly high humidity, frequent hand washing, elevated perspiration, or acidic skin chemistry — oxidation can accelerate.

This reaction forms silver sulfide (Ag₂S) on the surface. Depending on exposure level, this process may become visible within days or weeks.

The timeline varies significantly between individuals.

The Role of Rhodium Plating

Each piece is finished with rhodium plating for added brightness and enhanced resistance to tarnish.

However, rhodium plating is a surface layer.

Surface layers naturally experience friction through:

  • Daily hand movement

  • Contact with hard surfaces

  • Ring stacking

  • Repeated washing and drying

If friction is frequent, the plating may gradually thin in certain contact areas.

When this occurs, contrast between high-polish surfaces may make the change appear pronounced, even though the underlying silver remains structurally intact.

This is a physical characteristic of plated precious metal — not a production defect.

Why It May Appear “Severe”

High-polish finishes reflect light intensely.

When oxidation begins or plating gradually wears in specific areas, the visual contrast can amplify the appearance of change.

In most cases:

  • The metal itself is not compromised

  • Structural integrity remains intact

  • The effect is surface-level

Surface-level changes can often be professionally restored.

Our Material & Quality Standard

We use genuine 925 sterling silver that meets international standards.

Short-term oxidation or plating wear — even within one week or one month — is not classified as a manufacturing fault. It is a material response influenced by environment and individual wear conditions.

Structural issues such as metal cracking, casting defects, or stone instability would be treated separately under quality evaluation.

Maintenance & Re-Plating Services

For clients who prefer to restore the original appearance of their piece, we offer professional services including:

  • Deep cleaning and polishing

  • Surface refinishing

  • Rhodium re-plating

As oxidation and plating wear are natural material characteristics rather than production defects, maintenance services may involve a service fee.

Final Perspective

All authentic precious metals evolve:

  • Silver oxidizes

  • Surface plating gradually wears with friction

  • Gold develops fine surface marks

  • Platinum forms patina

These changes reflect authenticity, not inferior quality.

We remain committed to transparent material standards and to supporting our clients with professional care whenever desired.
